I’m a former Soylent customer getting ready to try Plenny for the first time. The ingredients look great - better than Soylent. I’m going to start with Plenny Active, which I’ve heard is closest to the texture of Soylent powder.
For those of you who have tried Soylent, how do you think I might feel about the texture of Plenny? Will I find regular Plenny more grainy than the Active, or will both formulas to be smooth enough if I use a blender? One thing I do like about Soylent powder is the texture.
Love the customer service from Jimmy Joy so far, and how quickly my emailed question received a friendly response. The community on this forum is outstanding, too. Really looking forward to trying my first shake.
You will most likely find it a bit more grainy as we have oats as our base. You can let the shakes sit for a few hours before consuming. Using a blender might also help it a little. Please make sure to give it a shake beforehand as we dont use thickeners. So some splitting between the water and the ingredients does happen.
Welcome! I should preface that I have never tried Soylent. On taste and texture I definitely prefer the regular Plenny shake, but I do also consume some Active to go with my workouts. The Active doesn’t thicken up as much and also needs more water to dissolve fully. Chalkier in taste as well. In either case I recommend shaking WELL for 10 seconds before letting it sit for at least 10 minutes. This allows the oats to absorb the water and really helps the texture, especially with the regular shake. The Active seems to benefit less. I also prefer putting it in the fridge for this as the cold helps the flavour for me, but you may prefer room temperature.
Thanks to you and to Nino for your very helpful replies!
I’ve taken the plunge and placed my first order. I’m getting regular Plenny in chocolate and vanilla, and Plenny Active in chocolate. I thought that I should try both formulas to see which one I like best.
I’m going to try the same method I use with Soylent: Mix it in a blender and leave it in the refrigerator overnight. I might tinker with the flavoring, too. With Soylent original flavor, I substitute an ounce or two of freshly brewed coffee for some of the water, and add a 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa powder. I’m going to try this with Plenny vanilla.
I’ll report back once I’ve had my first few shakes.
I promised to report back after my first few shakes. Unfortunately, my report isn’t good.
Turns out that I had no problem with the texture of either the Plenny shakes or Plenny Active. They were just a little gritty, but I got used to it right away. Both shakes were nicely filling, too. More satisfying than Soylent, and that was a surprise.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t stand either the vanilla or chocolate flavors. To my taste, there was something very artificial to the vanilla, and even the smell of it puts me off. I was able to drink a few of the chocolate, and while I do find them filling, there was something strange and unpleasant about the chocolate flavor. It’s not the oat flavor of Plenny - I actually like that taste. Sadly, both the chocolate and vanilla flavors were so off-putting to me that I realized I’d never finish a bag of powder. I had to request a refund.
I feel badly that neither flavor worked for me. The customer support from Jimmy Joy has been stellar, and I really like this community too. I just don’t think there is a flavor I can drink. I wish there was a way to get small samples of other flavors to see if there were any I found palatable. I don’t feel right placing another order for different flavors, and then having to ask for another refund if I really dislike the taste.
Thanks for the update! I’m sorry to hear that the flavors you tried didn’t suit your taste. As we all know, taste can be quite subjective, so it’s always a challenge to please everyone.
I’m glad to hear, however, that you found the shake filling. that’s an aspect we put a lot of focus on.
At the moment, we’re not planning to offer samples due to the high costs involved, but I’ll certainly make a note of your suggestion for future consideration.
The customer service from Jimmy Joy is so great that I had to give Plenny one more chance. I’ve ordered the banana Plenny shake, which I’ve heard has a very mild, natural flavor. Hoping this turns out to be the flavor that works for me.
The banana is indeed like a very oaty banana smoothie. Thicker than the other flavours too. I too couldn’t stand either the vanilla or chocolate, I had to mix them in with other flavours to finish them when I got them. The strawberry, wild berries and coconut flavours also taste quite natural (by including the real thing, like the banana), if you find you still want to try others after the banana.
Great news! I love the banana flavor. I’ve had two shakes a day since I received my order, and now I actually crave Plenny.
For me, it’s a very natural banana flavor. Nothing artificial to the taste, and not too sweet. It tastes like a banana that’s just barely ripe but not sugary. I add two ounces of milk instead of all water, and it’s creamy and delicious.
So many companies struggle with fruit flavors. Often they are way too sweet or just taste fake. Jimmy Joy got the banana flavor exactly right.
Now I’m excited to try the strawberry and the wild berry flavors.
